Does sanitizing actually fix a duct odor?

Usually not on its own. Sanitizer sprayed over loose dust just dampens the dust. Cleaning has to come first: negative air on the trunk, agitation through each branch, then an EPA-registered product labeled for HVAC surfaces. Fogging a dirty system does little. It also puts chemical on top of the odor source instead of removing it.

In this valley the odor is rarely mold in attic ducts. Air here is too dry for that. What we actually pull out is rodent droppings, shed insulation fiber, fine silt, and wildfire soot tracked in during late summer. Mold does turn up in crawlspace runs under older Willow Glen and Naglee Park homes, and at coils and drain pans year-round.

Material decides the method. Gray and black flex from the 1970s through the 90s has a brittle inner liner. Once it is torn or shedding, no sanitizer helps; that section gets replaced. Galvanized trunk from the 1950s and 60s wipes down well. Paper-backed wrap on those older units can contain asbestos. We do not disturb it. Test first.

Sanitizing is wasted money while a boot hangs loose above a ceiling register, or a panned joist return pulls unfiltered attic air. Seal those, correct the 1-inch filter bypass, then treat.
